Abstract: The electromagnetic properties of an HTS cable under fault current are thoroughly researched in this paper. The simulation model of a YBCO cable is built for analyzing the current distribution of YBCO cables under different fault currents. Large amount of experimental data on the current distribution of HTS cables under different current conditions were gained, verifying the simulation results. The current distribution of a YBCO cable indicates that the copper former on which YBCO tapes are wound plays an important role under large fault circuit currents. The results of this paper will be an important reference for the designing of reliable YBCO cables, particularly for studies on the quench detection and protection issues.
